Another
excellent "Made in USA" design. The very name "Fisher" spoke for
itself, because Avery Fisher founded and ran a company that left
behind dozens of models of very good construction equipment. And
thanks to their quality, they are still in demand (and working). The
500B is an earlier and a bit weaker brother of the 500C model. The
difference is a simpler VHF head with one ECC85, no headphone jack
and minimal changes to the electronics. The output lamps are 7591 in
the Push & Pull arrangement, which gives the power of 2 x 35 W.
An interesting fact of the 500B design is the small number of lamp
types used in the construction. In the 1 x ECC85 head, the
intermediate frequency path is 4 x EF94, the audio amplifier path
with driver tubes (and one in the MPX decoder) is 7 x ECC83.
Besides, the stereo decoder apart from the mentioned ECC83 has 2 x
ECC81. There is also the "magic eye" lamp working as a stereo EM84
indicator. A total of 19 lamps and 6 types. The Scott 340B described
elsewhere has 9 types of lamps with a total of 18 on board. The
Fisher 500B has, for such a simple head, excellent sensitivity with
very good separation. The MPX decoder is a very good system, stereo
can be seen in the speakers. As is usually the case with tubes, this
design is completely analog, one of the best in tube audio
equipment. The MPX signal indicator also works as an FM signal
indicator. The equalizing amplifier and power amplifier sound very
wide, the band control has a very large increase. An interesting
fact is a special socket for remote control of min. volume. The
imperialists and in the 60's they were lazy and liked to quiet down
by the bed. But seriously, in the 1960s, a lot of equipment on the
American market was made for mounting to walls or consoles.
Therefore, it did not have housings (like the model in the photo)
and had additional remote control sockets.
